What is the National PTA Reflections Cultural Arts Program?
The National PTA Reflections Cultural Arts Program was established in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson as a way to recognize all children, including those who do not get the opportunity to shine, and to enhance art education in schools. The program offers students from preschool through senior high a chance to create theme-based original art work in one of six Art Areas: literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production. Each has its own set of rules.
There are for Grade Divisions: Primary: Preschool - 2nd Grade; Intermediate: 3rd - 5th Grades; Middle/Junior: 6th - 8th Grades; and Senior: 9th - 12th Grades.
This year’s theme is "I Can Make A Difference By...". Only new pieces of art work inspired by the theme are acceptable. To make clear the connection between the art work and the theme, students are highly encouraged to provide an optional statement or title on the Official Entry Form.
While the Program is not a competition, students receive local PTSA recognition for their achievements, and may go on to receive state PTA and national PTA recognition for their art work. Independent judging following the National PTA rules and guidelines will determine three Awards of Excellence in each Art Area within each Grade Division to advance to the state PTA level.
The Sierra Verde PTSA hopes that all students will participate in the Reflections Cultural Arts Program. Each student may submit one entry per Art Area for consideration. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 3:30 p.m.
Finally, all participants, their families and Sierra Verde School students and staff are invited to share in and support our school’s rich talent at the Reflections 2008 Preview and Reception evening on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Following the reception, all artwork will be on display in the Media Center through the end of January. Entries moving on to State competition will be sent on at the appropriate time.
